Where should I stay in White Mountain National Forest?

The White Mountain Nation Forest is a vast wilderness nestled within the Presidential Mountain Range and touching several communities.  This part of the world includes many activities for anyone with an appreciation of nature and the outdoors.

There are 7 main communities which are on the borders of the White Mountain National Forest.  These include North Conway, Lincoln, Gorham, Jackson, Twin Mountain, Littleton and Franconia.  The most popular places to stay are North Conway and Lincoln whereas North Conway is the most popular.

There are over 6 million visitors which enjoy the many facets of the White Mountain National Forest.  From hiking the 48 4000 foot mountains to exploring the many waterfalls, the region is full of nature sights and scenic beauty.

The Best Hotels in the White Mountain National Forest

The best hotels around the White Mountain National Forest would be the Mount Washington Hotel and The Glen House.

Mount Washington Hotel

The Mount Washington Hotel is world renown and ranked as the most luxury hotel in New Hampshire.  It is situated in Carrol New Hampshire near the Twin Mountain area.  The hotel is positioned at the base of Mount Washington with spectacular views of the Presidential Mountain Range.

The Glen House

The Glen House is one of the newest additions to the Mount Washington Valley.  It has 68 spacious rooms with many enjoying unique views of Mount Washington.  The Glen House is positioned at the entrance to the Mount Washington Auto Road and at the base of Mount Washington.

Campgrounds In and Around the White Mountain National Forest

There are many opportunities for camping in the area including primitive campgrounds within the White Mountain National Forest and more developed campgrounds just outside of the forest.

Some of the primitive campgrounds can be found in Evan’s Notch, Pinkham Notch, Crawford Notch and on the Kancamagus Highway.

Most of these sites are primitive sites in the heart of the White Mountain National Forest.  The rates range from $15-25 per night for the site and one vehicle.  Additional vehicles are $5 extra.  Sites are typically on a first come first serve basis and can fill up fast during the summer.  Although, you can make reservations for some sites.

Backcountry Camping in the White Mountain National Forest

Backcountry or Dispersed Camping is allowed in the White Mountain National Forest.  Although, here are some of the rules as to where you cannot camp.

Camping and fires are prohibited

  • No camping within 200 feet of water bodies or trails
  • No camping with ¼ mile from a road, shelter, hut or backcountry facility
  • No camping in the alpine zone where the trees are 8 feet or less
